Responsible Drinking & Safety Notice
Wine Rebels Adventure Lab is about curiosity, creativity and experimenting with wine—but every experiment must be approached responsibly.
Adults only
This website contains alcohol-related content and is intended only for people who:
- are at least 18 years old; and
- have reached the legal drinking age in the country, state or location where they are accessing the website or participating.
If your local legal drinking age is higher than 18, the higher age applies. You are responsible for complying with the laws that apply where you live or participate.
Alcohol must never be supplied or served to anyone below the applicable legal drinking age.
Drink responsibly
Participation is always optional. You do not need to finish a drink, consume every experiment or drink alcohol to participate in tasting, rating or social activities.
If you choose to drink:
- use small tasting quantities;
- keep track of every alcoholic ingredient added;
- remember that wine, spirits and liqueurs combined in one experiment may produce a stronger drink than expected;
- eat beforehand and drink water;
- take breaks between experiments;
- do not pressure anyone else to drink; and
- stop drinking if you feel unwell, impaired or uncomfortable.
Australian health guidance recommends that healthy adults drink no more than 10 standard drinks per week and no more than four on any one day. Drinking less reduces the risk of harm, but no level of alcohol consumption is completely risk-free. See the Australian alcohol guidelines.
Never drink and drive
Never drive, ride, operate machinery, use tools, swim, supervise dangerous activities or undertake another activity requiring alertness after drinking alcohol.
Plan safe transport before beginning an experiment. This might include choosing a designated alcohol-free driver, arranging accommodation, using public transport or booking a taxi or rideshare.
Legal blood-alcohol limits differ between locations and types of licence. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect reaction time, judgement and coordination. See Healthdirect’s alcohol and driving information.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
People who are pregnant or planning a pregnancy should not drink alcohol. For people who are breastfeeding, not drinking alcohol is safest for the baby. This reflects current Australian NHMRC guidance.
Medicines and health conditions
Alcohol can interact with prescription medicines, non-prescription medicines, herbal products and other substances.
Do not participate in an alcohol experiment if alcohol is unsafe for you because of:
- medication;
- a medical or mental-health condition;
- pregnancy or breastfeeding;
- an allergy, intolerance or dietary restriction;
- a history of alcohol dependency; or
- advice from your doctor or another qualified health professional.
If you are uncertain, ask your doctor or pharmacist before consuming the experiment. Healthdirect provides further information about medicines and alcohol.
Check every ingredient
Wine Rebels experiments may combine wine with spirits, liqueurs, mixers, fruit, herbs, dairy products, desserts and other pantry ingredients.
Before preparing or consuming an experiment:
- read every product label;
- check for allergens and intolerances;
- check use-by dates and storage requirements;
- wash fresh produce;
- use clean equipment and food-safe containers;
- keep perishable ingredients refrigerated;
- do not consume spoiled, contaminated or unidentified ingredients;
- never use substances that are not intended for human consumption; and
- confirm that every ingredient is lawful and safe to consume in your location.
Common allergens may appear in unexpected products, including milk, eggs, nuts, peanuts, gluten-containing cereals, soy, sesame and sulphites. Food allergies can be life-threatening. See the Food Standards Australia New Zealand allergen information.
Experimental and user-submitted content
Recipes and experiments published by Wine Rebels Adventure Lab may be:
- experimental or untested;
- submitted by members of the public;
- modified from their originally submitted form;
- based on personal taste and individual experience; or
- published as entertaining examples, including unsuccessful experiments and Disaster Files.
A Lab Report, rating, certification label or other Wine Rebels description does not guarantee that an experiment is safe, suitable, enjoyable or appropriate for every person.
Results can vary depending on ingredient brands, quantities, preparation, storage, individual health, tolerance and other circumstances. Use your own judgement and stop immediately if something appears unsafe.
Heat, glass and preparation hazards
Some experiments may involve hot liquids, chilled or frozen glassware, sharp utensils, blenders, carbonated ingredients or other preparation hazards.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for all equipment. Use heat-safe containers where necessary, take care when opening carbonated drinks and never heat alcohol over an open flame. Do not boil or microwave alcohol unless a professionally verified recipe and suitable equipment specifically provide for it.
Alcohol emergencies
Seek urgent medical help if someone is unconscious, cannot be awakened, is breathing slowly or irregularly, is vomiting repeatedly, has a seizure, appears confused or dangerously affected, or you otherwise suspect alcohol poisoning.
In Australia, call Triple Zero (000) and ask for an ambulance. Outside Australia, call the emergency number for your location. Do not leave the person alone or assume they can “sleep it off.”
Not medical or professional advice
Wine Rebels Adventure Lab provides entertainment and general information. Its content is not medical, dietary, food-safety, legal or other professional advice.
You remain responsible for deciding whether an experiment and its ingredients are lawful, safe and suitable for you and your guests.
