Scientist’s Notes

This recipe creates a sweet, deep purple-coloured margarita. I was inspired by my pet peacock, Pablo, for this one, but if the colour isn’t important you can use the usual Triple Sec, and any berry flavoured liqueur.

LABORATORY OBSERVATIONS

APPEARANCE

Deep, dark purple with colourful floating berries.

AROMA

Sweet berries.

FLAVOUR

Sweet berries are the strong forward flavour, with hints of tequila and lime.

BALANCE & MOUTHFEEL

Cold, smooth, sweet deliciousness.

RESULTS & VERDICT

WHAT WORKED

The berries worked a treat and brought a usually sweet and sour drink more in line with the sweet. It felt like margarita’s fancy cousin.

WHAT WE WOULD CHANGE

We added the fresh lime juice right at the end, and that just balanced out the sweetness nicely, adding fruity citrus freshness. The formula probably did not need agave added since the liqueurs already added a sweetness, so next time I would try it without the agave syrup.

FINAL VERDICT

Absolutely beautiful margarita-styled berry cocktail with a delicious balance of sweet and sour, and the addition of frozen berries for garnish and visual appeal.

PERMITTED MUTATIONS

AUTHORISED VARIATIONS

If colour isn’t important to you and you don’t have blue curaçao, triple sec is a perfectly good replacement. Agave can be replaced with any simple syrup. For a less sweet version, omit the agave.
